Lutein is an antioxidant carotenoid found in large concentrations in the eye. Since the body cannot make lutein, it must be obtained from the diet or supplements. Research shows that lutein intake correlates directly to the amount of lutein found in the macula of the eye. Lutein in the macula protects the eye by blocking harmful blue light rays.
