Licorice Root Licorice (Glycyrrhiza glabra), whose genus name is appropriately derived from the greek words meaning "sweet root", is used worldwide as a flavoring for foods, beverages and assorted confections. However as early as the third century B.C., herbalists valued the beneficial properties licorice root had to offer, traditionally using the herb to support upper respiratory health.
