Fennel Fennel (Foeniculum vulgare) was first cultivated by the ancient Romans, who used the fruits of the plant as a culinary ingredient. Fennel was also traditionally used to help alleviate bloating and gas. The plant's use as both a popular culinary ingredient and a digestive aid continued to grow over the centuries.
