Vitamin D3, also known as cholecalciferol, is a fat-soluble vitamin that plays a crucial role in bone health by aiding in the absorption of calcium and phosphorus in the body. It can be produced endogenously when ultraviolet rays from sunlight strike the skin and trigger vitamin D synthesis. Additionally, Vitamin D3 is found in dietary supplements and fortified foods to help maintain adequate levels for optimal health.
Also known as: Vitamin D3

SUGGESTED USAGE: As a dietary supplement, take 1 softgel daily with a meal, or as directed by a health care practitioner.
Vitamin D enhances the uptake of calcium from the diet, is necessary for bone and dental health, regulates immune activity and supports healthy cell division. Recent research indicates that Vitamin D also may play an important role in supporting cardiovascular health.

Vitamin D3 softgels supply this key vitamin in a highly-absorbable liquid softgel form. Vitamin D3 is converted by the kidneys into the hormone calcitriol, the activated form of Vitamin D. Vitamin D is normally obtained from animal foods in the diet or produced by the skin from the ultraviolet energy of the sun during optimal conditions. However, it is not abundant in food and as people increasingly avoid sun exposure during prime exposure times, Vitamin D supplementation becomes even more necessary to ensure receiving an adequate supply. In various clinical trials and epidemiological surveys, 60 percent or more of Americans have been found to be Vitamin D deficient. Vitamin D enhances the uptake of calcium from the diet, is necessary for bone and dental health, regulates immune activity and supports healthy cell division. Recent research indicates that Vitamin D also may play an important role in supporting cardiovascular health. Mechanisms include the inhibition of vascular smooth muscle proliferation, the suppression of vascular calcification, the down regulation of pro-inflammatory cytokines, the up regulation of anti-inflammatory cytokines, and the action of vitamin D as a negative endocrine regulator of the renin-angiotensin system in order to regulate vasoconstriction, arterial flow and normal repair of arterial tissues.
Cautions and Interactions The current upper limit for vitamin D is 2000 IU daily, though recent safety reviews have suggested a five-fold increase is warranted. Supplemental vitamin D should be used cautiously in those on digoxin or any cardiac glycoside or suffering from hypercalcemia.
Drugs that may interact with vitamin D including bile sequestrants, ketoconazole and related drugs, phenobarbital, phenytoin, and antacids with aluminum. Pregnant/nursing women should consult a physician before use.
Side effects are rare in healthy adults with intakes below 2,400 IU daily.
