L-Carnitine is a non-essential amino acid produced by the body from lysine and methionine. L-Carnitine may play a role in the transport of fatty acids to the mitochondria which is then used as a fuel source. L-Caritine may also help with preserving glycogen levels during exercise and has been suggested to stimulate lipid metabolism.

Acetyl is a water soluble methyl group that is single-bonded to a carbonyl compound. It is typically found with organic compounds such as neurotransmitter chemicals, acetylcholine and acetyl-CoA that are found in the brain. ALCAR is suggested to have improved absorption when compared to L-Carnitine base. It may also support increased neuron activity, alertness, and mitochondrial capacity. It may aid in reducing cognitive decline as well as assisting in repairs of damaged neurons and the protection of healthy neurons.
